C.A.P.
is a group that seeks to promote
cultural activities on a non-profit basis;
it was formed in 1994 by a group of artists.
The name is an abbreviation of
The
Conference on Art and art Projects.
Introduction.
It is impossible to assess the efficiency and results of artistic
activities with only a limited amount of time. This is because there is no way
of measuring a work of art's according to preexisting values. Moreover, the act
of creation itself gives rise to values and questions the basis for new values.
In contemporary society, many things are subject to a value judgment based on
the presence or absence of short-term economic return and added value. Art, however,
is something that shouldn't be evaluated simply according to a set of values.
At present, there are a number of "sites" such as
art museums and halls designed for the presentation of works of art. Yet, we believe
that artistic activities should be considered not only from the standpoint of
appreciating art as a completed work, but also in terms of artists' ideas and
the processes that are used to realize a work. In addition, art is something that
requires cultivation within daily life, and art museums and halls alone cannot
sufficiently answer the needs of a range of artistic activities. There is currently
a need for a new type of outlet for these activities and creative efforts.
As a social function, we believe it is vital that a new place
exists, where, regardless of occupation, age, sex or nationality, people can gather
to communicate with each other and exchange opinions within the context of art.
In addition, in the process of exchanging opinions, a variety of people will therefore
have a chance to explore art more deeply and help expand the possibilities of
the medium. And in the end, isn't giving form to these possibilities and realizing
them artistically the most important thing of all?
In 1994, a group of artists, who gradually grew to feel the
need for such a place, assembled to form an independent group, free from governmental
and corporate interests, to organize a host of activities. Until the present,
the group has continued to enrich the scope and quality of its activities based
on its past achievements. But in order to encourage the further permeation
of
art in society and increase the possibility of people coming into contact with
and becoming more familiar with art, the group has decided to establish itself
as a non-profit organization in April 2002. In so doing, C.A.P.
aims to make a meaningful contribution in the creation a better society.
